CCSU Barnard Hall
Addition / Sitework / Utility & Drainage / Concrete Curbs & WalksLocation: New Britan, CT
The newly upgraded Barnard Hall renovations and addition make it the heart of the School of Education and Professional Studies Program at CCSU. In addition to the 10,000 sf building addition, the site covers 76,500 sf and serves as the main pedestrian circulation connector through the campus. The main challenge for us in creating the new site were the underground utilities that needed to be installed and re-routed to make the project happen. Extensive work around existing tunnels was required to accommodate the new steampipe operations. Once that work was completed, we tied in the new sidewalks to the originals on the perimeter and built the tiered seat wall area, patio and steps, as well as the columns that tower above and support the signage.
The project began in June 2019 and was in full-swing when the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in February of 2020. The State of Connecticut slowed the project down for March and April. In spite of this, we were able to push through on the schedule and were less than 90 days over – all work was completed in May 2021. In addition to creating a much-improved experience for those walking the campus, the area also creates a welcoming environment that encourages students to gather and interact with the landscape.
