Brewery Square Seawall

Location: New Haven, CT

Construction Manager: City of New Haven DPW

Having been ravaged by both Hurricane Irene and Sandy, the Brewery Square Seawall was well past due for reinforcement and replacement when we were brought on to do the job. A major challenge for this project was timing the tides of the Quinnipiac River in order for the initial excavation/demo and the installation of the new tie-back systems. We began by installing new sheet piles in front of the old ones prior to removal. The new sheet piles were treated with the latest corrosion prevention technology to ensure they endure well into the future.

We had to create a bulkhead in the seawall in order to install the drainage system that tied into the City’s storm water drainage. Another big task for this project was the tie-back system that was installed 30 feet behind the wall but was required to hold the system together and prevent any movement over time.

For the finishing surfaces and to cap the undulating sheet piles, we created a form system that included lumber and thread rods – creating these forms was a veritable work-of-art that yielded a seamless look and feel for the finished outcome.

“It was good project and things went very smoothly… The Colossale crew was very attentive and managed to work well with their equipment on a tight construction site that required a lot of oversight and paperwork demands as it was a federally funded project. They worked very well to satisfy all requirements.”
